3 Simple Ways to “Lighten Up” Your Relationship with Food
How do you feel about eating healthy foods? When you hear the word “diet,” do you realize it simply means how and what you eat (for example, a healthful diet, vegetarian diet, paleo diet, etc.) rather than the word taking on a negative connotation associated with deprivation. Shifting your focus from self-deprivation to self-control takes time (and effort), but changing your relationship with food is not just a 30-day challenge… it’s for a lifetime.
Once you change your attitude towards food, the more permanent the changes become a part of your lifestyle. But unfortunately today’s latest trends in diet and exercise create a lot of confusion. Because of the society we live in, many struggle daily with feeling the need to count calories and cut carbs, step on the scale and fit in their skinny jeans. In addition, our society is full of convenient foods (addictingly) made for the consumer’s pleasure. But, the more you embrace a positive attitude about following a healthful diet, the sooner you’ll adopt a genuinely positive attitude with the food you Eat from the Earth to fuel your body. As a result, your relationship with food will improve immensely.
Wondering how to start? Grab a pen.
How do you start your mornings? If it’s rushed and on auto-pilot, more than likely it’s also filled with anxiety and stress…not exactly the most productive way to start your day. Instead of overloading your brain with the latest gossip news on your spare moment with coffee, grab a journal and a pen and begin to reflect by jotting down three things you are grateful for. When you start every single morning with an attitude of gratitude, you’ll begin to view your life and the world around you (including the food you eat) as full of things to be thankful for. Shift your focus from the moment you wake up and you will start to look at things differently and do things differently, too.
“You get peace of mind not by thinking about it or imagining it, but by quietening and relaxing the restless mind.” ~Remez Sasson
When you allow yourself to move your body the way you like to move (whether it’s yoga, walking, CrossFit, cycling, etc), exercise becomes a part of your lifestyle rather than something you dread. There is no right or wrong movement; as long as you enjoy it, you’ll stick with it. In the same light, when you shift your focus to view food as fuel and not as a (pleasure-filled trap) reward after your workout, you demonstrate much needed respect to your body.
Give it a try: give yourself permission to spend a week choosing foods that honor your body that carries you around on this world day in and day out and make a note of how you feel in your journal. Now, that’s something to be thankful for!
