Green Your Health: 10 Earth Day Tips to Go Green and Eat Clean

April 22 is officially Earth Day, but one day is simply not enough – here at LizzyJays, we’re highlighting some simple steps you can do to reduce your impact on the planet and decrease your carbon footprint all spring (actually all year) long! Pause for a moment to soak up some inspiration and make changes in your own daily activities…then encourage change in those around you. Because going green for Earth month is not just about recycling and taking shorter showers….when you eat sustainable foods, you can also help save the planet.

10 Ways To Eat Earth-Friendly

1.Buy Fresh, Buy Local: Eating locally grown foods is possibly the best way to lower your carbon footprint when it comes to what you eat. Visit your farmers market to buy fresh, local food directly from the farmers. It’s also the best way to eat what’s in season for the most vibrant nutrition.

2.Think Outside the Box (and bag): Remember, nature has provided us the packaging that we need- steer clear of anything that comes in excessive packaging like a $6 pre-peeled orange. Since packaging is often made out of unsustainable materials, it can have a huge impact on our environment.

3.Consume Less, Waste Less: We often buy more food than we need which leads to waste. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that an estimated one-third of the food produced worldwide for human consumption is wasted annually and in the United States, an estimated 40 percent of edible food is thrown away. Plan meals and make a shopping list, then only buy those items you need.

4.Grow Your Own: We are what we grow. Transform your backyard into an edible garden and put your green thumb to work. The best way to bring climate-friendly food into your life is to reclaim your own power to grow, create and cook your food because the diet that’s best for our bodies is also best for our planet.

5.Support the Community: Don’t have a green thumb? Not to worry. Consider joining a community garden or a CSA (community-supported agriculture) group which allows you to reap the benefits of locally grown produce without getting your hands messy.

6.Go Vegetarian: Earth Day is the perfect time to experience a vegan or vegetarian diet. Researchers from Loma Linda University found that vegans have the smallest carbon footprint, generating 41.7 percent fewer greenhouse gasses than meat-eaters and 13.9 percent fewer than vegetarians. Not only are you eating healthy, but you are protecting our water, forests, climate and planet as a whole. Even just moving to a semi-vegetarian or Flexitarian diet (small amount of animal foods are consumed) can also make a difference – semi-vegetarians have a 20 percent lower carbon footprint. Give it a try for a day or a whole week.

7.Say NO to GMOs: Remove processed foods from your diet and eat organic whenever possible to avoid genetically modified, industrially grown organisms. The less a food is processed, the less energy is required to make it – resulting in a smaller environmental footprint.

8.Eat Green: Greening your diet (literally) is a simple way to make a big difference in your health and the environment. Every single one of our cells wants to be fed “life force” food– foods which are energized and grown by the soil, sun and earth. So add a rich variety of raw produce to every meal to enhance flavors and maximize nutrient absorption.

9.Grab a Juice: At LizzyJays we specialize in sourcing only the freshest and healthiest juices made with a blend of organic, non-GMO, and clean produce from local farms in NY, PA, and NJ using best practices. Our farm-fresh ingredients are simple and honest. Indulge your taste buds with vibrancy and flood your body with nature’s nourishment. Plus, we donate all of our leftover pulp for composting, completing the growth cycle and being as eco-friendly as possible.

10.Make Conscious Decisions: Take a moment to think about every purchase and how it may impact you and your family’s health and the environment. When you take the time to honor your “living” body and nurture it with “living” food, your body will respond positively. And when April is over, keep those earth-friendly habits going for the rest of the year.
